Flight schools seek sops for fuel

Mumbai: Flight training institutes (FTIs) in India are feeling the heat of high fuel prices and want the government to do something about it. Although the price of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) has come down 10 times from what it was in May 2008, the price of 100 Octane ATF (100LL) fuel, used by FTIs, continues to remain high.
At present, the price of ATF used by airlines is Rs27 per litre. However, that of 100LL used by FTIs is almost double. "The price of ATF is revised every 15 days and now it is 10 times less than what it used to cost till November 2008," says Captain YN Sharma, chief operating officer (COO), Chimes Academy, Sagar, Madhya Pradesh (MP). "But there are no signs of the price of 100LL being brought down."
"The cost of 100LL forms 35-40% of the operative costs of FTIs in India," says Captain Yashraj Tongia, owner of Yashair Academy, Indore. FTIs have to pay sales tax on it in the range of 4% to 40%, depending on the state they operate from.
