Hyderabad/Mumbai: Jet Airways, which is attempting to reduce capacity to tackle its financial losses, is also working on pruning staff costs.
"There might be a substantial cut in the staff cost," Saroj Dutta, Jet's executive director, said. While he did not specify if there are going to be any job cuts this time, he said the airline is looking to cut staff salaries.
"There are other options like not hiring any further, not filling up the vacancies arising out of resignations or retirements or a cut in the salaries. In fact, we have not fired anyone so far," Dutta said.
This would be a second round of salary cuts for Jet employees after October 2008, when the senior management took up to 25% reduction or deferral in pay for a year, to help the airline ride out tough times.
On an average an airline needs 100 employees per aircraft and in the Indian context it's a little higher as Indian airlines cannot outsource a number of services.
