Things go ‘missing’ at HAL airport

Bangalore: Several key equipment at the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Airport, which has shut its shop with respect to commercial operations since May 2008 has been shifted to other airports across the country.
The beneficiaries, Calicut, Sholapur and Pune airports, got essential equipment including x-ray baggage machines, closed circuit television (CCTV), conveyor belts, diesel generator sets and trolleys.
On technical grounds, this shifting is a violation of the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
This, when the airport's closure has been effected despite the move being challenged in the Karnataka High Court.
Express sources confirmed the move and said that the dismantling of equipment when the matter is sub judice is unfair.
Moreover, at the tripartite meeting held between Airports Authority Of India (AAI) Joint Workers Forum, Ministry of Civil Aviation and the AAI before the closure of the HAL Airport it was decided that no equipment will be dismantled and that a status quo is maintained.
A HAL official said that, technically speaking, "Even if there is a ruling in favour of the HAL Airport reopening, we cannot start operations as there are no equipment," he said. The chances of a favourable ruling for HAL are remote though.
