Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Monday stayed the transfer of 2,000 permanent employees of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to other airports maintained by AAI.
In 2006, the AAI had given the airport maintenance contract to Mumbai International Airport Private Limited (MIAL) for 30 years. According to the operation management development agreement (OMDA) between the two, AAI employees would continue to work in the same positions for three years after MIAL took over.
But before the operation support period's expiry on May 3,2009, the employees were offered jobs by MIAL. More than 100 employees joined MIAL and the rest were asked to either accept transfers to other airports or go for a VRS.
The workers contended before the court that those who did not accept transfers had to go for VRS. The workers' unions had said the OMDA envisaged that those who did not join MIAL would become surplus and would eventually be retrenched.
