Chennai: The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) will soon withdraw its airconditioned bus services to the airport from the Chennai Central railway station. In fact, with not many passengers deciding to uses these buses, the MTC had already started withdrawing the services and has now decided to withdraw them completely, both to and from the airport.
The airconditioned bus services to the airport were inaugurated by Transport Minister K N Nehru on May 14 last year with much fanfare and have been in operation on two different routes one via T Nagar and DMS and the other via Adyar and Mandaveli. A total of 36 trips have been operated every day in both the directions.
While a single airconditioned bus of the MTC is supposed to generate a daily revenue of at least Rs 17,000 towards the maintenance cost, MTC officials said the airport services, despite being in operation round-the-clock, did not get adequate patronage from passengers. They were generating only a few thousands of rupees in collections each day, they added.
