Bangalore: For facilitating import/export of pharmaceuticals from Bangalore, the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) on Wednesday announced the setting up of a `port' office at Bengaluru International Airport.
At present, there are four zonal offices in Ghaziabad, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata.
Also, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) plans to upgrade sub-zonal offices in Hyderabad and Ahmedabad to a full fledged zonal office. Taking the plan forward, sub-zonal offices will be set up at Bangalore and Chhattisgarh.
"BIA authorities have agreed to provide 150 sqft, and in two weeks, a full fledge office will be set up. Senior drug inspector (south zone) Mani Vannan will head the port office assisted by two trainees," said Dr Surendra Singh, DCGI.
The sub-zonal office will be set up on the premises of Karnataka State Drug Controller General of India, and will facilitate licence sanction and approval of clinical trails.
The DCGI also announced starting of `pharma zones' -- dedicated areas for export and import. Cold storage facility and laboratory for testing samples will be included at pharma zones coming up in Mumbai and Hyderabad airport.
