Surat airport ILS gets green signal

Surat: The instrument landing system (ILS) set up at Surat airport costing Rs 5 crore has been given the green signal by flight inspection unit (FIU), New Delhi.
A team that visited the airport and inspected the system has sent a positive report to Airports Authority of India (AAI). Once the calibration testing is over, the ILS will become operational.
"A team of five engineers visited the airport on July 21. They checked the landing and take-off of planes with the newly-installed ILS . The process was repeated a number of times to check accuracy and effectiveness. Now, AAI will inform other airports in the country to use the system," said an airport official.
ILS is particularly useful for landings and take-offs in bad weather conditions. "At present, for a plane to land minimum visibility required from is 2,500 m. With ILS becoming operational in a few weeks, landings will become possible from 1,200 m visibility," said Surat airport controller Ashok Verma.
