Court issues contempt notice to pilots' union

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Wednesday issued contempt-of-court notices to Jet Airways pilots and their union, the National Aviators Guild (NAG), asking for reasons why action should not be taken against them. Justice D Y Chandrachud observed that the pilots, by not reporting to work over two days, had affected about 400 out of 600 flights and brought the airline's activities to a virtual standstill.
The union and its office bearers have to give their reply by Monday, which is when the court will hear the matter again.
The order came almost at the end of the court's working day, when Jet Airways, seemingly at its wits' end, moved the court saying that the pilots were in contempt following an interim order the court had passed on Tuesday. Jet Airways counsel C U Singh said that despite an HC division bench restraining the pilots from going on an "illegal strike'' and violating the Industrial Disputes Act, they had defied the order.
