DGCA: AI 829 pilots grounded

Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has confirmed that the pilots flying the Boeing 747 (AI 829), whose engine caught fire on Thursday (September 4) at Mumbai airport have been grounded following an enquiry into the incident.
Air India has said the pilots have been de-rostered and called in for enquiry.
DGCA sources said the pilots would be quizzed on why they were unable to apprehend and act on the malfunction that eventually caused the fire, ahead of the 213 passengers boarding the flight.
As per the pilot operating handbook, all pilots have to conduct a pre-flight inspection, or a final walk around the aircraft physically checking for any malfunction or anomaly. Any problem detected or suspected has to be immediately reported to the flight engineer. If there was a fuel leakage prior to flight, as is being suspected, the pilots ought to have detected it on time, sources say.
