Ahmedabad: A survey, prompted by frequent bird hits at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport, has revealed that birds find the foliage around the airport comfortable for nesting. This is according to a report on project Bird Menace at Airport' conducted by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation(AMC) in consultation with Airport Authority of India, Ahmedabad.
Till September this year, 14 bird hit cases have been reported from SVPI airport, in some cases engines of the aircrafts were also destroyed.
A team from AMC with Air Traffic Control (ATC) officers took rounds of the airport and found that its surroundings had many tall trees and nests of different species of birds. Some birds and animals commonly found at the airport include kites, egrets, weaver birds, monitors and snakes, among others.
As per International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations, airports should ensure that grass near the runway does not grow beyond four inches. However, it was found that half the airport area had grass beyond the permitted limit which had become home to reptiles, mammals and birds.
