Coimbatore Airport to get more facilities by Pongal

Coimbatore: More facilities including a parallel taxiway and additional parking aprons will become operational at the Coimbatore Airport by mid-January, coinciding with Pongal. Modern arrival and departure halls and aerobridges are likely to be ready by June.
According to informed sources, the completed works and ongoing works slated for completion before the start of the World Classical Tamil Conference in June 2010 were reviewed over the last two days by Airports Authority of India Regional Executive Director K. Devaraj and Airport Director M.R. Vasudeva.
The construction of a 1,772-metre-long and 23-m-wide parallel taxiway with a 7.5 m shoulder on either side have been completed.
The parallel taxiway will enable faster handling of landing and take-off. Aircraft meant for departure could be despatched one after the other from the parallel taxiway.
Earlier, the airport had only five parking bays, including one isolation bay for aircraft perceived to have security issues. The number of bays is now eight. All these works have been carried out at an outlay of Rs. 36 crore. The facilities are ready and trial operations are likely by Pongal.
