New Delhi: The Ministry of Civil Aviation has told a Parliamentary Committee that Air India lost Rs 750 crore on the daily Mumbai-New York and Delhi-New York daily non-stop flights last year. The Mumbai flight was launched in August 2007 while the Delhi connection was started in February 2008.
The committee was also informed that the airline is re-examining some of the 29 international routes which account for a loss of about Rs 2,000 crore.
This has been brought out in the latest Committee report on National Aviation Company of India Ltd (NACIL) – the merged entity of erstwhile Air India and Indian Airlines – which was tabled in Parliament late last week.
The airline reported a post-tax loss of Rs 5,548.26 crore in fiscal 2008-09, almost double that of the previous year's loss of Rs 2,500 crore.
Meanwhile, thereport points out that Air India has added just one new international destination to its route network since June 2005, when the Government allowed domestic airlines to start operating in the international skies.
