Mumbai: Air India (AI) has become the first airline to get its Boeing 777 fleet compliant with the US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) directive to install a new autopilot software as a safety measure, before the deadline.
Keeping in mind the safety of passengers, the FAA had issued an airworthiness directive on March 15, asking airlines having Boeing 777-200, 200LR, 300, 300ER and B777F to install the new autopilot software within 90 days. But AI got the software installed on March 24 for its 17 Boeing 777-200, 200LR and 300ER.
An AI official said: “We have become fully compliant with the FAA directive to install new autopilot software. This is a big feat for AI as the directive is effective from April 1 and the deadline to finish the installation is 90 days. The new software will make sure the autopilot does not get switched on erratically.”
Jet Airways said it had already started the modification process.
