New Delhi: The freebie spell of former civil aviation secretaries is continuing unabated. In a cleverly worded order issued on Thursday, the ministry exempted the retired bureaucrats from paying 'usual official charges' for using facilities such as premium lounges and VIP rooms at private and joint venture airports as well. The ministry order stated the facilities had been extended to them "as a matter of courtesy". Earlier, the government had given the former secretaries and their family members lifelong free upgrades.
The ministry issued a revised order on Thursday and dropped the words 'official charges' from its March 16 order. It also added 'JV/Pvt Airports' in the new order, allowing ex-secretaries free access to joint venture and private airports, such as the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, the Mumbai international airport and the Hyderabad airport.
On March 27, MAIL TODAY had reported that in a bizarre please-all gift to its former bureaucrats, the ministry had approved free upgrade of air tickets to the highest class. It had also allowed them unhindered access to airports all over the country, including facilities such as protocol and escort services and access to VIP lounges and parking areas.
