Mumbai: Air India chairman and managing director Arvind Jadhav may be drawing a monthly salary of about Rs 1.5 lakh, but his junior, newly-appointed chief operations officer captain Gustav Baldauf, will be drawing about Rs 20 lakh per month, apart from other allowances and perks. The parliamentary standing committee on transport, tourism and culture has written to the civil aviation ministry seeking an explanation on the matter.
"The COO's salary can't be more than 10 times the salary of AI's chairman. We have asked the civil aviation ministry to explain this decision," said parliamentary committee head Sitaram Yechury. "It is ironic that the Prime Minister seeks a cap on salaries paid to executives in the private sector but allows a government-run company to pay a stupendous salary," Aviation Industry Employees' Guild general secretary George Abraham said.
One of the AI unions has also written to the PM about the AI COO's salary. The Air India Cabin Crew Association, in its letter, said the Rs-3 crore annual salary package came at a time when the airline had not yet paid salary to 31,000 of its employees this month.
