PPP mode for multi-level parking at airport

Chennai: The Airports Authority of India is resorting to public-private partnership (PPP) model for 35 of the airports it owns across India, for city-side development. In Chennai, the multi-level car parking that was to come up as part of its terminal expansion will now come up under the PPP.
“Going the PPP way is cost-effective as AAI will not have any immediate investment. For the multilevel car parking we are saving almost Rs.70 to Rs.80 crore. In the long run its a win-win situation for both parties,” a senior airport official said. The 2-km walkalator, which was to come up alongside the flyover outside the airport has now been kept in abeyance. Pruning costs even in IT requirements like the public-announcement system have been obvious. Though AAI officials claim that there was no cash crunch, the cost-cutting on expansion plans have raised eyebrows. “We are doing development in an operational airport without any flight disruptions. It is more difficult than developing a greenfield airport. Costs keep increasing,” the official added.
The estimated budget for expansion was Rs.2,000 crore and fresh estimates indicate that it was already touching Rs.2015 crore.
