The latest expansion plans at the BIAL are in and the Board of Directors forecast the expansion of the current passenger terminal. This was announced by the the appointment of Mr. GV Krishna Reddy as the Vice Chairman of the BIAL Board and Mr. GV Sanjay Reddy as the company’s Managing Director. The new expansion is going to keep the Zurich Airport’s layout as the template for the new terminal masterplan. Zurich Airport is well known as a global pioneer in airport operations with currently ten airports under contract. Zurich Airport’s home base airport in Switzerland has consistently been ranked best or amongst top three airports in Europe and across the globe.
Terminal 1 will sport an enhanced and modern design elevation and will be completed 18 months from the commencement of its construction this September. The project has been designed by Global architectural firm HOK. The construction partners for this project will be selected through a competitive bidding. The cost of this expansion is estimated to be around Rs. 600 crores.
In another significant announcement, the design and layout of the expansion of Terminal 1 was finalized and work on the expansion of the existing Terminal 1 will begin in September this year. When completed, Terminal 1 will be expanded by 70% of the existing building with an additional passenger space of 40,000 square meters. This addition will take the terminal capacity to 17 million passengers per annum, a requirement that will suffice till the year 2015.
