BIA prepares for panic button scene

Bangalore: The Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) conducted a successful emergency evacuation exercise of the complete terminal building on Wednesday.
The exercise, one of the firsts at an Indian airport to improve preparedness and to tackle emergencies, was held from 11.30 pm, May 18 to 2 am on May 19.
A few shortcomings were noticed during the three-and-half hour drill by the fire and emergency services.
EU Erappa, chief fire officer, Bangalore West Zone, Fire and Emergency Services, told Express that more rescue teams should be deployed at BIA.
“As the terminal area is big, a couple of more rescue teams would be needed for quick evacuation of those trapped.” He said those present inside the terminal — be it the airport staff, those running business establishments or passengers — should be more serious and take active part in such drills.
An evacuation scenario was simulated and the emergency evacuation mechanisms at the terminal building were put to test. These consisted of a combination of methods and tools to be used for tackling evacuation scenarios at the terminal, focusing on saving human lives, protecting property and retaining normal airport operations.
