BIA takes rain test ahead of monsoon

Bangalore: With the southwest monsoon ready to hit southern India in about a fortnight, there could be disruption of air traffic at various airports across the south due to unfavourable landing conditions.
Sunday's heavy downpour in Bangalore alone led to the diversion of about half a dozen flights at the Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) as they could not make a landing.
Airport authorities in various airports have already initiated a monsoon contingency plan to ensure that there is no major disruption of flight services.
At BIA, officials said that premonsoon checks in accordance with the ICAO and DGCA guidelines were carried out to ensure that all facilities continued to remain serviceable during monsoon.
Besides, the airport is equipped with ILS (Instrument Landing System), which allows the aircraft to operate in poor visibility and low clouds.
"The maintenance and ground landing staff have been put on alert to keep the runway and taxiway in good condition and to ensure that flights take off and land without any difficulties," said an official.
This apart, the Air Traffic Control (ATC) is also on high alert.
