Doppler Weather Radar inaugurated at Delhi airport

New Delhi: Minister of State for Earth Sciences Prithviraj Chavan today inaugurated a Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) at Palam here as part of a major modernisation programme undertaken by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
IMD is replacing its old and conventional radars by the state-of-the-art S-band DWR in a phased manner at different locations in the country, mainly near the coatal areas. The one at Palam is the first DPR.
Each radar is capable of covering a distance of 500 km and their observations will be supplemented by satellite observations.
Mr Chavan said the new radars would give ocean temperature, and various other parameters and will be sent to super computers. The data will be crunched at very high speed and the information will be available within a very short period.
The various meteorological, hydrological and aviation products derived from DWR data using a variety of software algorithms will prove to be very useful for forecasters in estimating a storm’s centre, its intensity, fixing its position and predicting its future path and safe navigation for aircrafts and ships, an official press release said.
