Mohali airport awaits MoD nod to take off

Mohali: Even after over two years of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Punjab and Haryana to develop an international civil airport terminal in Mohali, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is still awaiting the final nod from the Indian Air Force, Ministry of Defence (MoD), to award work for the project.
Though the MoD has already accorded No Objection Certificate (NOC) to take up the project, a formal working permission is still to be granted, said AAI Executive Director Administration/PR) T Premnath in response to an RTI query.
The MoD nod is required as the site on which the airport is to come up, is adjacent to land under the control of the Indian Air Force.
With the plans and drawings for the proposed terminal building and other operational facilities still under finalisation, no timeline for completion of the project is yet fixed, disclosed AAI (Aerodrome Planning) General Manager Piyush Joshi.
The development assumes significance as the Chandigarh Administration has urged the AAI to fix a deadline for completion of the upcoming international airport.
