When Air India Express IX-812 crashed after overshooting the runway at the Mangalore airport, Sattar was one of several residents in the area who rushed to the accident site.
Nearly 160 people were burnt alive as the plane went up in a tyranny of flames last month. Eight people survived. For nearly 15 hours, residents in this part of Karnataka formed unofficial rescue teams, helping to pull out dead bodies and attend to the survivors.
A jeweler who Sattar met alerted the police - some of the ornaments were slightly charred. Twenty three-year-old Sattar, a bus driver, has been arrested, and will soon face theft charges with a maximum sentence of seven years in prison. Two men who worked with him are still missing.
