Bird activity disrupts flights at IGI

New Delhi: The light drizzle through the night on Wednesday meant that aircraft at the IGI airport had stiff competition from other winged creatures for air space on Thursday.
Massive bird activity all through the morning led to some flights being made to go around while a few, most notably a Cathy Pacific flight that had landed around 1.30pm, reported bird hits.
Operations had to be stalled on about four occasions to enable runway inspections during which dead birds were also found on the runway.
Such unprecedented bird activity and consequent scale of disruption has led the directorate general of civil aviation to set up an enquiry into the incident and a meeting of all stakeholders has been called on Monday to discuss the issue.
Sources said that because of the overnight drizzle, there were many insects near the runways which attracted a large number of birds. These caused a major problem for aircraft specially on the old 9/27 runway where many arriving aircraft, including one from Indigo, were asked to go around.
