Thiruvananthapuram: Dr Shashi Tharoor, the lawmaker representing Thiruvananthapuram, will soon meet federal Aviation Minister Praful Patel to call for expediting work on the allied infrastructure at the international airport here.
“Work on the aircraft hangar started in 2006, and was to be completed in 2008 but that didn’t happen. Similarly work on the bus bay, which will provide a vital link to the airport, is yet to begin,” Dr Tharoor told reporters after reviewing the project’s progress yesterday.
Flag carrier Air India has planned for a full engineering and maintenance unit of Boeing 737-800 aircraft here to meet the increasing demand from the Gulf sector. A modern international terminal with advanced facilities is to be commissioned by Praful Patel later this month.
Officials at the airport said Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi, who was earlier slated to open the terminal on July 14, will also attend the inaugural function on July 16 along with Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, M Vijayakumar, the state’s minister in charge of aviation, and Dr Tharoor.
