Chennai airport lacking adequate staff

A safety audit conducted by Aviation Safety Directorate of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has found that Chennai Airport lacks adequate staff to operate newly installed instruments.
The reason behind the lack of staff is believed to be the quick pace of modernization of the airport. The audit that began on June 19 also found that remote installations lacked fire warning system.
The five day audit, mainly shows that adequate manpower is not posted on the new installations and they are manned by maintenance staff from the existing departments. This not only adds to the workload significantly but also puts the Communication, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS) system at risk.
The Airport recently added a new radar, Advanced Surface Movement Ground Control System and automation of Air Traffic Management (ATM) and CNS. AAI officials said that Fire Services Department of the airport must alert the fire station at the airport.
The team also pointed out that the Air Traffic Control Tower did not have an emergency exit and could be dangerous in case of fire.
