New Delhi: The capital’s dreaded power cuts have cast their shadow on IGI Airport’s new terminal T3. While Wednesday saw the lights going out thrice, the record so far has been 11 blackouts in one day recently. Though Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi will inaugurate the terminal on Saturday and it would get operational by mid-July , a reliable source of uninterrupted power supply is expected only by the month-end .
The reason: Delhi government has not been able to lay a 220-kV high-voltage line in time for T3’s opening. As a result, the existing low capacity supply line gets overheated while trying to power T3 which has a load of a medium city at 50 MW. This leads to frequent tripping.
The new terminal has gensets but they can’t run its whopping 20,000-tonne airconditioning system and be used for other basic and essential purposes simultaneously . The Delhi government, which has not been able to provide the required water, power, sewerage and road connectivity to T3 in time for its opening, blames the airport authorities for the delay in laying of the power line.
