Air travel demand down for second month

Bangalore: Domestic passenger traffic tumbled for the second consecutive month in July, as airlines carried 4.2 lakh fewer passengers compared to June.
The local market had seen a similar drop in demand in June, when airlines had carried 5.87% less fliers than the previous month.
The ministry of civil aviation data released on Wednesday showed a 10% dip in the number of passengers carried by local carriers to 40.84 lakh in July from 45.04 lakh in June.
Though, airlines carried 14.03% more passengers in the same month compared to last year, when they collectively flew 36.49 lakh passengers.
A senior airline executive, who did not want to be named, said air traffic dipped in July because it is traditional a lean month.
And as the demand slipped in July, so did the seat factors of the airlines. All of them saw their seat factors sink as it hovered in the mid-seventies and low eighties in the month as against high eighties and nineties in June.
