New Delhi: A week after the new terminal T3 opened up at IGI Airport, there were still several issues to be sorted out. Baggage handling turned out to be a major problem as ground handling staff appeared to be incapable of dealing with the new systems installed at the airport. With baggage of some flights taking as long as one hour to start coming out on the conveyor belts, the civil aviation ministry was forced to step in and recommend training for personnel.
According to senior officials of the ministry, Air India was particularly plagued by the problem of insufficiently trained staff.
Meanwhile, amid allegations that the baggage belt system had not been performing well at all, Delhi International Airport (P) Ltd (DIAL) officials said the problem of belts stopping frequently had been dealt with largely.
Shower and restrooms for passengers were also under construction and are likely to be ready only in another month. DIAL officials said, till the time an alternative was found, transit passengers would have to make do with the visitors' lounge and temporary arrangement for food and water had been made for them.
DIAL officials also said that passengers had been finding it extremely difficult to reach the airport in the absence of proper signages to guide them from Mahipalpur crossing.
