Chennai: Garbage is being dumped in the open in the middle of Chennai’s Anna International Airport, perilously close to the main runway, raising fears of a fatal bird-hit at the facility. With even a small stray bird being able to bring down a 300 tonne jetliner, encouraging scavenging birds at the airport is an invitation to disaster, experts said.
Airport officials have turned a blind eye to the waste strewn close to the CISF canteen and the terminal building, barely 300 metres from the main aircraft landing tarmac, despite the fact that recent bird-hits have forced aircraft to make emergency landings. Open garbage dumps are not permitted within several kilometres of an airport.
“Even after the last week’s incidents with birds delaying a landing by over 15 minutes, the authorities have not bothered to get the area cleaned. Leftovers from the CISF canteen and nearby offices are dumped at the site, drawing birds close to the runway,” a CISF official at Chennai airport told Deccan Chronicle.
