New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has asked the civil aviation ministry to hand over documents related to the transfer of 32 acres belonging to the Airports Authority of India to Mumbai International Airport. The GVK Industries-led MIAL, which is modernising the Mumbai airport, had asked AAI for the land at Dahisar in Mumbai suburbs to relocate slum-dwellers who have encroached upon airport land.
Taking suo motu action after receiving some complaints, the CBI asked the ministry to provide relevant documents related to the award of airport modernisation to the private company. Sources said CBI has already filed a preliminary enquiry (PE) into the matter.
“Some unidentified officers of the ministry of civil aviation and AAI entered into an unholy nexus with the management of GVK-led private airport company in violation of the terms of the contract between MIAL and AAI and agreed for permanently transferring 32 acres of land of AAI at an undervalued rates,” the CBI note to the ministry states.
However, ministry officials have taken the position that CBI’s observations are premature, as valuation of the land in question is yet to be conducted.
