Conduct obstruction survey regularly, inquiry court tells AAI

Bangalore: The court of inquiry investigating the crash of IX-812 Dubai-Mangalore Air India flight, which sat in Mangalore for the second day on Wednesday, directed the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to conduct obstruction survey regularly. The court’s direction came after it heard the deposition of various organisations of the Mangalore airport.
The court, headed by former air marshal B Neelkanth Gokhale, examined the reports by the AAI on various aspects of maintenance of the airport and sought clarification from the officials if the AAI was conducting the obstruction survey regularly.
The officials said ever since the new runway was constructed in 2006, the AAI had been conducting obstruction survey once in every six months.
An obstruction survey is a survey of land surrounding a table-top airport. In every table-top airport, like the Bajpe airport, the survey is necessary every six months, since the land outside the airport’s perimeter wall undergoes changes due to various natural factors.
