A major collision was averted at Kolkata airport on Monday as a landing Jet Airways flight came close to an Air India plane at the runway.
According to sources, it was the Jet pilot's judgement that the accident could be averted. The two planes came within 2 miles of each other, airport sources said.
Prima facie it was the fault of Kolkata air traffic controller (ATC) which gave landing permission to the Jet flight even as the Air India flight was on the runway.
Just 2 miles away from landing, the captain of the plane spotted the AI flight on the runway. He informed the Kolkata ATC and immediately flew back.
