Shiva statue: Trust told to relocate or reduce height

New Delhi: The National Facilitation Committee on airport-related matters headed by Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar, which last met on June 8, has taken a final stand on the Shiva statue on NH-8, which continues to compromise the safety of aircraft operations.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has now issued a final notice to the B K Birla Trust, the builders of the 80-foot statue, considered a man-made operational safety hazard in aviation terminology for flights landing from the NH-8 side.
While the AAI is awaiting a final response from the Trust, the Cabinet Secretary is learnt to have asked the authority to act in accordance with the law if the two options given to the Trust are not adhered to. The NFC has suggested that the Trust either relocate the statue, or lower its height in accordance with the no-objection certificate (NoC) issued to them in 1993.
According to the AAI, the NoC was issued to the Trust for the Shiva statue to be 74 feet above the ground. But the statue stands at 80 feet -- 65 feet of the statue plus the 15-foot pedestal.
