AAI staff 'no' to take salaries from MIPL

Nagpur: In their ultimate effort to avoid any association with Mihan India Private Limited (MIPL), employees of Dr Babasaheb International Airport at Nagpur have refused to accept wages paid by the new entity, which took over the airport over a year ago. This highlights the unwillingness of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) employees to cooperate in implementing the much-touted multi modal international hub airport at Nagpur (Mihan) project.
MIPL was formed and handed over the airport specifically for developing Mihan. It is a special purpose joint venture company formed between the state government-run Maharashtra Airport Development Company ( MADC) and Airports Authority of India (AAI).
However, since the airport was taken over by MIPL just over a year ago, employees earlier working for AAI have been unhappy with the set up. There have been several instances of disputes between the workers and MIPL.
Things worsened in August, when the workers refused to accept salaries credited to their accounts by MIPL and the issue ended up before the regional labour commissioner's office under the Union labour ministry.
Until August, the arrangement had been that AAI would pay the salaries to these employees, and it would then be reimbursed by MIPL, so technically the former remained the employer.
