AI staff prefer to say bye to sari

The sari that women among Air India’s air-hostesses have worn for decades is giving way to salwar-kameez.
“They want to do away with the sari,” a civil aviation ministry official told Financial Chronicle. The reason, according to him, is that it is difficult to work in a sari, specially in an emergency.
When the dress switchover happens – and it may take quite a while – no Indian carrier will have air-hostesses clad in sari. All other domestic carriers dress their air-hostesses in western attire. Apparently, the demand has come from Air India’s crew themselves.
The five-yard unstitched wonder that Indian women have worn for millennia will survive, however, in the air in the cabins of three foreign airlines: Biman (of Bangladesh), SriLankan Airlines and British Airways; the last named requires its Indian cabin crew to wear saris.
Air India’s board recently discussed the change in dress code, though the subject was not on the agenda.
In all likelihood salwar-kameez will be the dress code, though the option of skirts and blouses will also be available.
