Air India Says on Track to Join Star Alliance

New Delhi: Air India said Friday it is on track to join Star Alliance, the world's biggest network of airlines, by the first quarter of 2011.
Joining the 28 airline network that includes Air China, Continental Airlines, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, THAI, United and US Airways, will help Air India increase its global connectivity. India's loss-making national carrier will also be able to improve load factors and passenger yields by flying customers from member airlines on its own network.
"We are on our way to join the alliance," K. Swaminathan, an Air India spokesman told Dow Jones Newswires. "There are several functional prerequisites to enter the alliance and they are all being met."
Air India was chosen as a Star Alliance member in December 2007 but its formal induction has been delayed, mainly due to issues of integrating its systems with those of other Star Alliance members.
Mr. Swaminathan said Air India is in the process of integrating its ticket reservation system according to the alliance's requirements.
