Cargo contract workers at Mumbai Airport call off strike

Mumbai: Cargo operations at the Mumbai airport resumed today after an understanding was reached between striking cargo contract workers and the airport management here.
"Their issues were addressed in a meeting today following which the (striking) workers resumed work," a Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) spokesperson said.
Earlier, work at the cargo terminal of the city was severely affected after nearly 9,000 cargo workers went on a flash strike, to protest alleged lack of basic amenities, infrastructure and other issues.
While export cargo handling was affected, MIAL said that import cargo handling remained normal.
Private developer MIAL operates the airport and is responsible for providing these amenities at the cargo terminal, the striking workers said.
Around 600-tonnes of cargo is exported and another 650 tonnes imported at the airport which fetches an estimated duty collection of Rs25 crore daily.
