Tiruchi: Officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) have arrested three persons of Mannargudi, allegedly involved in smuggling gold, and seized about 1.378 kg of gold jewellery which was attempted to be smuggled through six passengers from Singapore at the Tiruchi airport.
Acting on intelligence inputs, officers of the Chennai unit of the DRI apprehended the three persons outside the airport before the arrival of the Air India Express flight from Singapore on Thursday.
The accused — A. Senthil Kumar, R. Gopinathan and N. Senthilkumar — were alleged to have come to the airport to collect the gold jewellery from six passengers arriving by the flight.
The trio had e-mail printouts containing details of the passengers, including their names, phone numbers and description.
On arrival of the flight, the six passengers were identified at the arrival hall of the airport and on enquiry they had said that they were not in possession of any gold jewellery. They had not declared the gold in their baggage declaration forms also.
However, a search revealed that each of the six passengers were in possession of two small packets containing gold jewellery and 500 Singapore dollars, according to a press release from C. Rajan, Additional Director General, DRI, Chennai.
