IGI's main runway finally takes off

New Delhi: In what will pave the way for the shifting of operations of the three full cost domestic carriers to terminal 3, the main runway that had been taken up for repair work in April was made operational on Saturday morning. The runway was put to test on the first day itself as two emergency landings were carried out on it in the evening.
According to sources, soon after a GoAir flight and a Jet Airway flight both headed for Delhi took off from Bangalore on Saturday evening, some pieces of rubber were noticed on the runway. The Bangalore air traffic control informed the Delhi ATC and the two flights were asked to make an emergency landing since it could not be determined which of them had suffered damage to the tyres. "It was decided to put the main runway to use for arrivals at this juncture since its test systems had to be tested. The runway is also of a good length and most pilots are very comfortable using it. Both flights landed safely around 6.30pm,'' said sources.
On Saturday, the new runway 11/29 was used mostly for arrivals and the main runway 10/28 for departures. International airlines specially benefited since they did not have to taxi all the way to and from the secondary runway that is quite a distance from the international terminal.
