Air Travel in India Surges 15%

Mumbai: Air travel demand in India continued to grow in October, with local airlines carrying 4.6 million domestic passengers, up 15% from a year earlier, government data showed.
Market leaders like Jet Airways (India) Ltd. and Kingfisher Airlines Ltd. saw a solid rise in passenger numbers, but the most dramatic growth came from low-fare carriers IndiGo and SpiceJet Ltd. as their low ticket prices helped them snatch market share.
Jet Airways, India's biggest carrier by market share, and its two low-fare units JetLite and Jet Konnect, flew 1.2 million passengers domestically in October, up 9% from a year earlier.
Kingfisher Airlines, owned by Vijay Mallya, carried 877,000 passengers during October, up 7% year-on-year, while national carrier Air India posted a 10% increase in passenger numbers to 877,000.
IndiGo, India's biggest low-fare carrier, carried 775,000 passengers in October, up 44%, and rival SpiceJet flew 630,000 passengers, a 28% jump from October 2009. Together the two airlines accounted for 30% of the local market, up from 25% last year.
