Kolkata: Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) the agency engaged to undertake construction of the 32-km Metro Railway stretch between Kolkata airport and New Garia ( Kavi Subhash) station expects to complete the project in five years, provided the Airports Authority of India (AAI) grants clearance.
AAI has no problem with the existing viaduct connecting the airport ( Biman Bandar station) to Dum Dum. However, officials are not keen to grant clearance for extension of this viaduct towards Barasat, as land earmarked by AAI for commercial use may get disturbed. Metro, on the other hand, plans to extend its network beyond the airport up to Barasat. While the arm between the airport and Barasat is not included in the airport-New Garia stretch, the Metro would certainly want to keep provisions for the extension.
"The alignment plan for the airport-New Garia project has been prepared. Soil investigation and survey have also been completed. From the day we commence actual construction, it will take us 4-5 years to complete the project," a senior Metro official said.
The Rs 3,951.98 crore project was sanctioned in 2010-11 and the outlay for the first year was Rs 100 crore. The state government has already been requested to allow construction of Metro lines along the median of the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass.
