Govt mulls easing airport land use rules

New Delhi: Airport operators may soon be able to set up commercial offices and call centres on airport land to raise money. A group of ministers (GoM) is likely to study an aviation ministry proposal to add to the number of ways in which airport land may be commercially exploited, two government officials said, requesting anonymity.
Private operators such as GMR Infrastructure Ltd and GVK Power and Infrastructure Ltd as well as state-run Airports Authority of India (AAI) are currently allowed to lease airport land only for aviation-related commercial infrastructure—such as hotels, restaurants, car parking and travel agencies.
If approved, the new policy would allow operators to lease out land for commercial projects that may not be aviation-related, but offer better terms.
