DGCA calls for ‘reasonable’ airfares

Aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has advised carriers to bring down fares without specifying any possible action for non-compliance. DGCA chief Bharat Bhushan on Saturday met chief executives of three low-cost airlines IndiGo, SpiceJet and GoAir and instructed them to determine tariffs fairly.
“Airlines have been told to be reasonable and transparent in fixing prices,” Bharat Bhushan said after the meeting.
DGCA will meet representatives of full-service carriers on Monday. Budget carriers have already been asked to give sector-wise details of fares and inform consumers.
Carriers had earlier proposed a price band for tickets based on distance, which was rejected by the aviation minister. The carriers had indicated a maximum price of Rs 24,000 to Rs 40,000 a ticket for distance more than 1,400 km.
