‘Govt can help reduce airfares’

Bengaluru: On a day when the ministry of civil aviation promised action to prevent airlines from charging excessive fares, Kingfisher airlines boss Vijay Mallya took on the government by demanding that it reduce the “excessive” sales tax it charged on aviation turbine fuel.
Dr Mallya said “bandwidth pricing” is implemented across the world and that fares of airlines should not be compared as they are commercial commodities.
Another aviation entrepreneur, Capt. Gopinath, said that all the government’s attention seemed to be on helping airports become profitable, while allowing airlines to bleed.
