Chandigarh: Most flights at Chandigarh airport were cancelled on Friday due to poor runway visibility.
As the weather in the city was hazy on Friday, the visibility level at the airport was measured at 2.5, while the level required for safe landing of the aircraft is 2.8. Only an aircraft of Kingfisher Airlines could land and take off in the afternoon. An Air India flight scheduled for take off at 3.20pm departed at around 6.15pm.
The airport?s non-functioning instrument landing system (ILS), which allows for foggy weather flying, increased the effect of low visibility on air traffic and that led to other flights being cancelled. However, Airport Authority of India (AAI) officials confirmed that the process of setting up a new ILS at local airport was on and would be completed in next 10 days.
The non-working ILS had crippled the working of the airport last year as well with airlines suffering revenue losses. Chandigarh airport is controlled by the Indian Air Force.
