Vijayawada: Development of Gannavaram Airport will boost Information Technology industry in Krishna district, particularly in Gannavaram IT SEZ. The Chief Minister, Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy, told the minister for secondary education Mr K. Parthasaradhi, on Monday that the government would release Rs 80 crore to acquire land which will be used to develop the Gannavaram Airport. The state government reached an MoU with the Airports Authority of India for the development of Gannavaram Airport in 2007.
Since then, the proposal has been pending due to delay in land acquisition. Finally, with the intensive lobbying by political leaders of Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and West Godavari districts, the Chief Minister has agreed to release funds to develop the airport. With the land acquisition, runway can be extended from 7,500 feet to 10,000 feet. Consequently, Boeing services can be extended to Gannavaram Airport.
Till now, only two flights are being operated each one from Hyderabad and Bengaluru. Jet Airways proposed to start services from March 27. Air India is also planning to start services to New Delhi by introducing connecting flight to Hyderabad. With the rapid development of the airport, the IT companies will have direct connectivity to Gannavaram. With the cost of living increasing in metros, the companies are looking towards the second grade cities like Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada for setting up industries.
