HC admits writ alleging large-scale fraud by AAI

Chennai: The Madras High Court on Wednesday admitted a writ petition in the nature of a public interest litigation (PIL) in which the petitioner has alleged serious fraud and illegality by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) in awarding contract for ground-handling services' to a private consortium at Chennai and Kolkata airports. The court took a serious note that AAI, in its counter, had not replied to some of the allegations
The PIL, filed by Oveyam Ranjan, a resident of West Shenoy Nagar, states that the awarding of contract to a consortium of two companies Bhadra International (India) Limited and Novia International Consulting APS was a case of fraud and corruption carried out in collusion with the civil aviation ministry and the AAI.
The first bench, comprising chief justice MY Eqbal and justice TS Sivagnanam, issued notice, returnable in four weeks, to respondents in the case including the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Passing orders on Wednesday, the Bench noted that the AAI had filed a counter-affidavit, as directed by the court before entertaining the writ petition, to meet the allegations made in the writ petition.
