Mumbai: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has identified a list of hotspots at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in the city that will become effective from April. Hotspots are zones on the airside where there is a higher tendency for an incident to occur. These are marked out for pilots to watch out for on the aerodrome map. Pilots, in turn, brief their crew about the hotspot zones.
This is the second revision of the list in the recent past, apparently done in view of the ongoing runway renovation work and cross runway operations. The list was last revised in September when four hotspots were listed.
In the latest list, an additional spot — the intersection between the main runway and two taxiways E and E — has been included.
Since last November, the main runway at the airport is being recarpeted because of which the shorter secondary runway is in use most of the day. In September, the airport began work on the runway-ends.
According to the International Civil Aviation Organisation, a hotspot is “a location on the aerodrome movement area with a history or potential risk of collision or runway incursion and where heightened attention by pilots and drivers is necessary”.
