Mumbai: A consumer forum last week ordered an airline and an insurance company to pay Rs 21,844 to a Vashi-based doctor who had booked tickets worth the sum to Varanasi in 2007 but could not travel owing to ill health. The forum also ordered them to pay the doctor Rs 15,000 for causing mental agony and Rs 5,000 towards litigation costs.
The forum said that the policy issued by Tata AIG General Insurance Company Ltd, available on the website of SpiceJet, clearly mentions that in case of cancellation of the trip, the insured would be repaid an amount up to the original cost of the tickets.
"Looking at these schemes, the traveler prefers SpiceJet over other airlines," the forum said, holding the insurer and the airlines guilty of deficiency of service.
In 2007, Dr Uday Thanawala wanted to travel with his family to Varanasi. When he opened the airline's website to book the ticket, he saw a notice from the insurance company informing him about various schemes relating to domestic travel insurance. Thanawala then booked four tickets from Mumbai to Varanasi for himself, his wife and children for December 2, 2007. He also booked two tickets from New Delhi to Mumbai for himself and his wife for December 6, 2007.
