Chandigarh airport New terminal building opens for public

Chandigarh: The new integrated terminal building at the Chandigarh Airport was thrown open to the passengers on Thursday. Equipped with escalators, a comfortable waiting area and flight information display systems, the new building is more spacious than the previous one. Though it was a soft launch for the terminal, the building will take another eight months to become fully operational.
The two aerobridges are yet to be constructed. These will facilitate the passengers to enter the aircraft from the lounge. Moreover, the old terminal building is also set to be demolished and the apron area increased.
While the new terminal building was used during the ICC World Cup semifinal match between India and Pakistan, when a host of celebrities descended here, on Thursday, the Kings XI Punjab team boarded their flight from the airport.
The building — constructed on an area of 17 acres — has two floors and is centrally air-conditioned. Two conveyer belts have been installed — one at the arrival and the bother at the departure. Weighing of the luggage and its movement has also become automated.
